Strategies, Hints, and Proven Methods for Healthiest and Longest Life Possible

Not an ordinary Saturday

Usually on Saturday mornings, I’d like to get up early with Justine. We have a cup of coffee before starting our exercise routines. She goes to Jazzercise, I take my 3 mile walk with my friends. This Saturday was certainly different. I had to wait for my transport person to push me to dialysis. It was five hours of complete boredom. I was surrounded by loving caregivers and dialysis nurses. They managed to suck 2 L of fluid off of me. It made no difference in my appearance. My legs grew larger, seemed heavier and now generalized weakness has ensued. This was only day five of 14 treatments they had proposed. It’s going to be a long journey and I’m trudging through it.

When I returned to my room, my incredible nurse, Madeleine, greeted me with a comforting smile as always. The shades were open and in the distance I could see Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains. I thought it would’ve been a great hiking day. It would be a more typical Saturday for me in November. I reflected on how lucky I was last winter to climb Camel’s Hump with Martha, my daughter-in-law. I am so glad I made that climb. It was a great memory that cheered me up. I wanted to be there today, though, I thought. Hopefully soon!

The day did end wonderfully with a great visit from Justine——-she has been a rock through this. She’s been dealing with me, the practice, and all the business elements that I typically take care of. Amazing really!! Nick and Martha, Matt and Rachel have been great supports to both of us.

We’re working out details about the practice. For my patients, all inquiries should go through the main number at 802-860-3940. For less urgent concerns, you can text or email me. During the day Nick, Justine, and Julie will do the appropriate triage of the calls. I’m still doing a lot of work from my “hospital room office.” It is working out just fine at this time. I need to keep busy!

Instructions are left each day on the phone message. They regard coverage for a specific day or evening for more urgent requests. There certainly may be disruption in the typical practice however we’re doing the best we can under these circumstances. Fortunately, I have wonderful and understanding patients that I’ve been so supportive and I’m greatly appreciative.

I know I’m in good hands tonight as Christy is back caring for me on the evening shift. She and Madeleine vowed to protect my sleep from unnecessary interruption——they are the guardians at my door!! You would not believe how hard these nurses work.
